Competency & Leadership

About us

First Principles was founded in 1994 by directors Kaye and Michael Maryan and over the years we have worked for many different organisations ranging from sole traders to multunationals and agencies of state.

Kaye Maryan

Kaye spent more than a decade in the health service, starting on the front line in telephone customer service and rising to become telecommunications manager for a group of healthcare organisations. It was while managing a large staff and multi-million dollar budgets that she first became involved in coaching and training. After a spell in management Kaye moved into training before starting her own training business. She later merged her business with Michael’s to form First Principles. Kaye is a skilled, empathetic work / life / career coach, HR professional and trainer with a special understanding of the needs of front line customer service staff and managers, and a passion for working with people. She has particular expertise in contact centre management and has a Diploma in Human Behaviour.

Michael Maryan

Michael began his career training to be a research scientist before changing his mind and completing a journalism diploma. He entered public relations and worked as a PR professional and publisher before joining a multinational and specialising in internal relations. He started his own PR and HR consulting business in the late 1980s … a business which grew to encompass leadership development, training, internal relations, communications, business advice and PR. He later merged this business to form First Principles and has done spells as a professional executive recruiter, and Programme Director for a post-experience level management development organisation. Michael has PR, generalist HR, capability management, and training design and development skills and has an absolute passion for leadership development.
